I Wake Up With Headaches A Lot

Have you ever felt tired even after waking up from hours of sleep at night or wake up with throbbing headaches? Do you experience tired jaw muscles from time to time? Many of our patients may not be aware of the link between head and neck pain and grinding/clenching during sleep. Sometimes these grinding habits can be silent.

Causes Of Grinding And Clenching

There are many possible causes of clenching and grinding. Research reveals it is also more likely to occur in patients who suffer from sleep apnoea or snoring. Some research also indicates that people are more likely to grind their teeth if they are in a stressful work environment or experience anxiety. Other possible causes include:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Smoking
  • Heavy alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders

Indicators

The most common symptom for teeth grinding is a headache. A comprehensive examination of your teeth, head and neck muscles will reveal the cause of your headaches. Signs such as worn surfaces on teeth and tender muscles are clear giveaways. If the habit is not controlled, it may weaken your teeth, leading to possible fractures and chipping, which may be expensive to fix. Not to mention, tiredness during the daytime and lack of concentration!

Treatment Options

If, after a thorough examination, we find you are clenching or grinding your teeth there are a few treatments we may pursue depending upon your individual situation. We may recommend a splint or mouth guard to wear while you are sleeping. This will prevent damage from occurring even if you are clenching or grinding throughout the night. The splint will take the pressure from your clenching or grinding, taking it away from your teeth, jaw and head. This will reduce the pain in these areas.

We Will Then Need To Treat The Damage Caused By Your Clenching Or Grinding. In Our Assessment We May Find:
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Teeth worn down
  • Damaged internal pulp
  • Loose or wobbly teeth

These will each need immediate attention and we will likely schedule appointments to treat the damage. If left untreated these problems will only develop further. Depending on your circumstances you may need a combination of the following treatments performed.
