Tooth Coloured and Porcelain Fillings

Tooth Coloured and Porcelain Fillings

Real Client. Real Result. Dentistry and photography by Dental Boutique.

Traditionally, metal amalgam (mercury) fillings were the material of choice to treat dental decay and cavities. There is an ongoing controversy as to whether having mercury fillings in our mouth poses any risk. Depending on your opinion you may opt to have tooth coloured fillings instead.

With the advancement in dental technology, there are many other alternatives to amalgam such as direct composite (tooth coloured) fillings, and indirect porcelain fillings (Inlays/ Onlays). At Dental Boutique, we believe in your freedom in material of choice, and will explain to you the advantages and disadvantages of each material for you.

Dental Porcelain (Indirect Fillings)

Dental porcelain has the properties which looks similar to tooth enamel. It is a tooth coloured substance that is partly translucent, that absorbs and reflect light to mimic the properties of a pearly white shine.

A porcelain inlay or onlay, on occasion, has superior properties over that of a traditional filling.

Some Advantages Of Dental Porcelain Include:

  • Aesthetics – the exact shade of porcelain is chosen to match your natural tooth colour
  • Stain resistant
  • Strong and durable
  • Strengthen the tooth when bonded to the tooth
  • Simple dental care
