Dental Crown and Bridge

Dental Crown and Bridge

Real Client. Real Result. Dentistry and photography by Dental Boutique.

Dental Boutique has been offering beautiful porcelain crowns for many years. Many people historically know of dental crowns constructed with gold alloy, and even from other metal alloys; however this is no longer the case.

At Dental Boutique, we offer porcelain crowns as they are cosmetically and functionally the best solution for severely decayed or damaged teeth.

When are Dental Crowns Needed?

There are three different times when people often believe they need a crown:

  1. When a tooth has decay only in the visible portion above the gum line – a tooth-coloured filling may not be enough to correct the decay so a crown can be used to cover the tooth entirely. It will preserve the tooth and prolong its life.
  2. If decay has extended into the tooth’s root – endodontic work may also be needed to remove the decay and preserve the teeth of the jaw bone and surrounding teeth.
  3. When a tooth is missing altogether – a dental implant can supply an artificial root, and a porcelain crown can be attached to it to provide a new tooth.

How Does a Tooth Crown Work?

A dental crown is a cap-like shell that is permanently cemented to the tooth and gives it an entire new surface and shape. Crowns can be placed over any tooth, back or front and are sometimes a good solution for a large metal filling which has become old and threatens to crack the tooth. That filling can be removed and a porcelain crown placed over the tooth to strengthen and preserve it.

What about Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is just like a crown only it is supported by the teeth either side. A bridge can be created to treat multiple teeth similarly to a crown with the single prosthetic and provides a realistic natural result as it is created the same care and materials as a single crown.

Teeth Crowns: What’s Involved?

Once the decision is made between you and your dentist that a dental crown is the best option, you will need to come for two visits.

1. After settling you comfortably and numbing the area, the dentists at Dental Boutique will remove all decayed and damaged tissue, along with all bacteria and debris. The tooth will be reshaped and resized to best support the crown to be placed over it. Then an impression or mould of it to be sent to the laboratory which will craft your porcelain tooth crown from this model.

2. The shade of porcelain to be used will be chosen by using a shade guide against your natural teeth, to most closely match their colour. As working with porcelain has an artistic aspect, we have invested lot of time and effort for continuing education in this aspect, which is not taught in traditional dental schools.

3. A temporary tooth crown will be added to protect your tooth. This will be made of a plastic material and held in place with temporary glue. The team at Dental Boutique will tell you how best to care for it.

After you are again comfortably settled and the treatment area is satisfactorily numb, the temporary crown will be removed. Your new crown will then be examined carefully and try it in for fit. It must work well for your bite, not rubbing against other teeth or causing any discomfort when your upper and lower teeth come together. We will slightly adjust its shape or size if necessary. When you and the dentist are both agreed that it fits well, the crown will be cemented permanently in place.

You now have a new tooth, with a new lifespan ahead of it. Give it good daily brushing and flossing, to make sure that bacteria can’t get underneath it. An all porcelain crown these days is as strong as any other kind, and far more attractive. Your new tooth crown should last you at least ten years, even twenty or thirty, if you care for it well.
