Braces & Orthodontics Mornington

If you are struggling with bite issues, jaw misalignment or crooked teeth, orthodontic treatment may be the right solution for you. At Dental Boutique Mornington, we offer braces and other orthodontic services that will transform your smile.

Orthodontic treatment can improve both the aesthetics and function of misaligned teeth. The benefits of orthodontics include:

  • Straight teeth that are easier to clean (which reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease)
  • An aligned bite
  • Relief from stress on the jaw
  • Reduces risk of injury by protruding teeth
  • A beautiful, straight and even smile

If you’d like to enquire about your options, our team of orthodontists in Mornington are ready to help you find the right treatment.

When is Orthodontic Treatment Necessary?

The upper and lower teeth should align together nearly when we bite. If they don’t, the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and jaw pain increases.

There are a few things your Mornington orthodontist will be looking for when considering whether or not you require braces or another orthodontic treatment.

Teeth that are crooked, crowded, overbiting, underbiting, cross biting or causing jaw asymmetries are key signs that indicate a need for braces.

In children, habits like mouth breathing and thumb sucking are warning signs. In adults, crowded or misaligned teeth suggest a need for braces or another appropriate treatment.

Other signs and symptoms include

  • Trouble flossing and brushing crooked teeth
  • Biting or cutting your tongue on teeth

Our orthodontists at Dental Boutique Mornington detect these issues and repair them using a range of appliances, including braces and Invisalign.

Leaving crowded, crooked and overlapping teeth untreated can result in a range of problems, such as

  • Gum disease and tooth decay, as crooked teeth are hard to clean thoroughly
  • Gum injury, if a crooked tooth cuts into surrounding gum
  • Excessive wear and tear as a result of chewing with a misaligned bite
  • Aesthetic issues, which can cause self-consciousness and a lack of confidence

Types of Braces & Other Orthodontic Treatments

Traditionally, metal braces were the only orthodontic treatment for crooked teeth or a misaligned bite.

Fortunately, advances in dental technology have resulted in new orthodontic treatments, such as braces in various materials and structures, Invisalign and Veneers.

Each of these treatments is designed to correct your bite and align your teeth.

We offer the following orthodontic treatments at our Mornington clinic.

1

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are still the most common type of orthodontic treatment.

Metal braces can be applied in a few different ways, but at Dental Boutique Mornington, we use a bracket system that is tailored to each individual patient for more efficient results.

Your orthodontic treatment will be tailored to you, no matter whether you need braces on your top teeth, bottom teeth or both. You can use coloured or clear elastics to decorate your smile and keep things fun during your treatment.

2

Ceramic Braces

For adults and teens experiencing aesthetic teeth concerns, ceramic braces are a discreet alternative.

They are made from materials that mimic the natural colour of your teeth, making them less noticeable.

However, they are also harder to clean and manage as they are bigger and more brittle than metal braces. Ceramic braces won’t be suitable for every patient. Your Dental Boutique orthodontist will assess your eligibility during your first consultation.

3

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are the most subtle of the three types of braces.

They are worn on the back of the teeth and cannot be seen when viewed front-on. They are typically used to correct issues with the six top and bottom teeth.

Lingual braces are usually worn for four to six months, but treatment time will vary depending on your individual dental concern.

As is the case with ceramic braces, lingual braces won’t be right for everyone. Your orthodontist will let you know if they are an option for you.

4

Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign are clear aligners that put pressure on the teeth to slowly shift them into the desired position.

They are invisible and removable, making them a common treatment among adults with minor alignment concerns.

Your dentist will take 3D scans of your teeth and tailor the aligners to create your dream smile. Our Invisalign treatments are completed in-house and are expertly tailored to each individual patient.

5

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shell-like caps that are bonded to the front of your teeth to give a new and improved smile.

They correct the colour, shape, surface and form of the teeth so that they appear straight, bright and white.

Porcelain veneers are made from a tooth-coloured ceramic material that looks and feels just like your real teeth.

Veneers do not reposition your natural teeth so they won’t be suitable for some patients. Your dentist will let you know if they are an appropriate option for you.

6

Retainers

Retainers are typically used as the last stage of orthodontic treatment. They are designed to be worn after you stop wearing your braces or Invisalign.

Your retainer keeps your newly-straightened teeth and corrected bite in the right place, reducing shifting of the teeth which can sometimes happen after your braces are removed.

There are two main types of retainers: a clear mouthguard-like retainer, and an acrylic retainer, which is a wire connected to an acrylic plate. Both are removable, so they can be taken out when you eat or clean your teeth.

There is also the bonded retainer, which is a thin wire that is glued to the back of the teeth and kept there permanently. This type of retainer is recommended for teeth that are more likely to move and crowd over time.

Repairing Your Teeth: Braces Cost Mornington

We understand that cost can be a complicated part of that picture, which is why we offer payment plans beginning at $100 per week.

The cost of your braces or other orthodontic treatment will depend on the severity of the damage, the number of teeth that need adjusting, the materials used, and whether you need secondary treatment.

Our staff are here to help you understand your options and the associated pricing. Get in touch with our Dental Boutique team in Mornington for orthondontist pricing information.

A Word on Emergency Orthodontistry

Occasionally, in between your scheduled appointments you may experience an orthodontic ‘emergency’.

Orthodontic care is intricate and requires various appliances and pieces to work together. Sometimes, through natural wear and tear, things can come loose.

Most issues can be temporarily resolved at home until you can come in to see us again. Only a few rare issues will require an emergency appointment.

Here are some examples of common orthodontic issues and how to best manage them.

  • Sore mouth: Non-Emergency. Having a sore mouth when you begin your orthodontic treatment and after each adjustment is common. You can relieve pain by rinsing with salted water and eating soft foods.
  • Loose appliance: Non-Emergency. If your orthodontic appliance is loose, you may feel some discomfort. You can manage this by using dental wax until we see you again.
  • Loose bracket: Non-Emergency. If a bracket has come off your tooth but is connected to the wire, you can pop some dental wax on it. It is recommended you book an appointment as soon as possible.
  • Loose wire: Non-Emergency. If your wire is loose, use tweezers to put it back into place. Then, use dental wax to hold it there until you can come in to see us. Book in an appointment as soon as possible.
  • Wire irritating your mouth: Non-Emergency. You can use dental wax to alleviate discomfort.
  • Missing separator: Emergency. Separators move the teeth apart so bands can be replaced regularly. If the space between the teeth opens quickly, your separator may fall out. Book an appointment as soon as possible. I

Separator stuck: Emergency. If the separator gets stuck underneath your gum, contact us immediately for an emergency appointment.
