Dental & Tooth Fillings Mornington

Dental Fillings | Dental Boutique Mornington

At Dental Boutique Mornington, we are committed to delivering exceptional, comprehensive and personalised dental care.

We endeavour to provide the highest-quality and safest options for our patients at every turn. That’s why we choose to be a mercury-free dental practice.

However, we also believe in your freedom to choose which material your fillings are constructed from.

During your appointment, our friendly and highly-skilled dentists will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each filling material to help you make an informed decision.

Types of Dental Fillings

While there are several types of fillings available on the market, we are a porcelain-only clinic.

The porcelain dental fillings we use at Dental Boutique Mornington carry a number of benefits and none of the risks associated with other filling materials.

Porcelain Dental Fillings

The porcelain used in dentistry has an extremely similar look and feel to our natural tooth enamel.

Porcelain is a tooth-coloured, translucent material that absorbs and reflects light in the same way our teeth do, resulting in a pearly white shine.

Dental porcelain has a number of superior properties when compared to traditional amalgam fillings, including

  • Aesthetics — we will carefully choose a shade of porcelain that exactly matches your natural tooth colour
  • Stain-resistance
  • Strength and durability
  • Strengthening of the tooth when bonded
  • Simplifying dental care

Amalgam

Amalgam fillings have been used for over 150 years.

They are created from multiple metals, such as copper, tin, zinc and mercury. These fillings are very strong and durable.

While exposure to mercury can be toxic, amalgam is safe for use in most dental patients. Amalgam is still supported by the Australian Dental Association (ADA).

However, the ADA advises against using amalgam for children and people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering from kidney disease.

Composite Resin

Composite resin fillings appear white or tooth-coloured.

They can be matched to the colour of your teeth so they are more discreet than amalgam fillings, but they are also less cost-effective.

It has been found that composite resin is not as durable when used to fill cavities in adult back teeth due to the increased pressure in that area.

Glass-Ionomer Fillings

Glass-ionomer cement fillings are most often used where there is a lighter biting force. They are also used on baby teeth.

These fillings can be matched to tooth colour but don’t tend to last as long as composite resin fillings.

Temporary Fillings

If there is not time to finish treating a tooth, the dentist may suggest a short-term temporary filling. This will be replaced by a permanent filling at a later date.

The Dental Fillings Procedure | Mornington Clinic

At Dental Boutique Mornington, our dental fillings are completed in-house and generally won’t require sedation. They can be completed in just one visit.

However, we understand that dental procedures can be anxiety-inducing for many people. You will have the opportunity to chat about this with your dentist, and they will be able to discuss your options with you. Sleep dentistry or sedation may be appropriate for you.

To begin, your dentist will apply a numbing gel to your gums. Then, a local anaesthetic will be injected into the gum to keep you comfortable during the treatment.

Next, your dentist will remove the rotted area of the tooth by using a dental drill. They will then fill in the hole in your tooth.

Finally, they will polish the filling and may file the filling down so that your bite feels comfortable.

Can Dental Fillings Be Removed?

At Dental Boutique Mornington, dental fillings are generally not removed as this can cause loss of healthy tooth structure and cause damage to the decayed tooth.

You won’t need to have your fillings removed and replaced regularly. Over time, your fillings may become cracked or worn down. Your dentist will be able to fix this to ensure they’re working properly.

If you have amalgam fillings, they should only be removed if considered medically necessary by a healthcare professional. Unnecessary removal may expose you to mercury vapour, which can be especially dangerous for children, pregnant or nursing mothers, and those with health conditions.
