A “gummy smile” occurs when excess gum tissue extends over the tooth surfaces, making more gum visible above the upper teeth when smiling.
A gummy smile can have several causes, including:
- Excess gum tissue
- An upper lip that lifts higher when smiling
- Tooth size or shape that appears out of proportion

Gummy Smile Treatment Options

1. Gum Contouring
This is a technique we use with laser technology to remove and reshape excess gum tissue in small sections that will reveal more of your teeth. This can create a more proportionate smile with a better ratio of gums to teeth.
2. Gum Lift with Porcelain Veneers
“Gummy smiles” are sometimes caused by disproportionate size and shape of teeth. If your gum tissue is healthy and correctly positioned, veneers may be a treatment used to help correct the size, shape and proportion of your teeth (gum contouring). This combination can help to decrease the amount of gum showing and increase tooth size.
3. Gum Lift With Braces or Invisalign
Moving the position of your natural teeth may be enough to change the proportions of your smile with treatments like braces or Invisalign/Clear Aligners.
However if required, gum recontouring can be completed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to help enhance orthodontic results by reshaping excessive or uneven gum tissue.

Does gum recontouring hurt?
Gum recontouring is typically performed under local anesthesia to minimise discomfort for our patients. We do tend to recommend patients to have some over-the-counter pain relief after their treatment to help with any mild soreness, which may occur.
Will I see results immediately?
Yes, your reshaped gum line will be visible immediately, however, the final results will be apparent once the gums have fully healed.
How do I care for my gums after the procedure?
Keep the area clean by brushing gently and using any prescribed rinses. Avoid strenuous activities and follow any additional aftercare instructions given to you by your dentist.
Can I combine gum recontouring with other cosmetic treatments?
We recommend consulting a dental professional prior to combining gum recontouring with any further procedures, however, some of our patients have combined gum contouring with other Dental Boutique procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening, or Invisalign.
