What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped covering designed to restore a tooth that is damaged, weakened, or affected by decay. It is placed over the existing tooth structure to help protect it and restore its function and appearance.

At Dental Boutique™, we use high-quality European porcelain to create our crowns. This material is crafted to be durable and to closely resemble the natural look of teeth, supporting both strength and aesthetics.

When are dental crowns needed?

There are three different times when people often believe they need a crown:

1. When a tooth has decay only in the visible portion above the gum line – a tooth-colored filling may not be enough to correct the decay so a crown can be used to cover the tooth entirely. It can help preserve the tooth and prolong its life.
2. When decay has affected the deeper part of a tooth – In some cases, root canal (endodontic) treatment may be required to remove the decay. A crown is then often recommended to protect the treated tooth and support its function.
3. When a tooth is missing altogether – a dental implant can supply an artificial root, and a porcelain crown can be attached to it to provide a new tooth.

Our Process for Dental Crowns

The process for getting a dental crown usually takes place over two visits. At the initial consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth, discuss your needs, and determine whether a crown or bridge is suitable. If a crown is recommended, your dentist will outline the steps involved and proceed with treatment based on your individual circumstances.

Your First Visit

During your crown treatment, the dentist will numb the area and remove decayed tooth tissue, then resize the tooth to properly support a porcelain crown. A mould is taken and sent to our lab, where a custom crown is crafted to match your natural tooth colour and thickness. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth until your final crown is ready.

Your Second Visit

The treatment area is numbed, and the temporary crown is removed. Your new crown is then fitted, adjusted for bite and comfort, and finalised once it meets both aesthetic and functional standards. Modern all-porcelain crowns are have durable and natural-looking characteristics, with proper care and maintained they typically can last 15+ years.
