My $10,000 nightmare: I went to an Aussie dentist for a new look and came out with ‘horse teeth’

A young mum-of-two was left with ‘horse teeth’ and $10,000 out of pocket after getting veneers in Melbourne.

Ash Murray was fed-up with having to go to the dentist regularly to correct ongoing issues with her composite bonding – an alternative method to veneers to fill the gaps in the teeth using a resin material.

Instead the 25-year-old opted for veneers and spent a year’s worth of savings – but the results were ‘utterly disappointing’ and extremely painful.

‘I got botched! I didn’t even know what to say, it was so embarrassing. They were huge!’ Ash told FEMAIL.

Ash said she told the dentist her honest opinion of her new smile and was reassured they ‘look great’, but her family and friends said otherwise.

‘The teeth felt really big and I could barely shut my mouth, but the dentist said I’ll get used to it,’ Ash recalled.

‘I got home and my whole family made fun of me saying I had horse teeth! They were so big for my mouth and were resting on my gums that it hurt and caused inflammation.’

The teeth were too wide for Ash’s small mouth; they were also unnaturally white and she developed a lisp.

Ash had the veneers refined five times, leading to further dissatisfaction when the top teeth chipped.

She had chosen a dentist recommended by friends who was known for affordability and proximity.

Despite the dentist’s outdated practices and the uninviting clinic appearance, Ash proceeded with the treatment.

To make matters worse, a week after getting the procedure her face became paralysed from Bell’s palsy.

‘It was such a weird coincidence – I was a mess,’ Ash said.

The young stay-at-home mum was also feeling the financial burden after spending $10,000.

Fed up, Ash chose to get her teeth fixed and opted for Dental Boutique who help out with ‘botched’ jobs.

She paid $19,000 to have her teeth redone in November 2023 and says she still hasn’t received a refund from the previous dental clinic.

Now Ash is encouraging others to ‘do their research’ when it comes to veneers and dental work to avoid the same awful outcome.

‘Make sure the dentist does a mock up and don’t commit until you’re 100 per cent happy with it,’ she said.

‘Go for a consult and try a few different places to get second opinions.’
