Restore & Protect Your Teeth

Many people are conscious of their oral health and how it contributes to overall wellbeing.

Traditionally, dental amalgam has been used for fillings to treat decay. It contains mercury, and while its use remains regulated, some patients prefer alternative materials. Tooth-coloured fillings are one option, offering a more natural appearance.

Some advantages of tooth coloured dental fillings include:

  • Aesthetics
  • Stain-resistant
  • Strong and durable
  • Helps to strengthen the tooth when bonded to the tooth
  • Can be completed in just one visit

Dental Fillings Options

With the advancement in dental technology, there are many other alternatives to traditional amalgam (metal) fillings.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Dental porcelain has properties similar to natural enamel. It is tooth-coloured and partially translucent, allowing it to reflect light in a way that resembles natural teeth. Porcelain inlays and onlays are one option for restoring teeth, alongside alternatives such as composite (tooth-coloured) fillings.

Amalgam (Metal) Fillings

Dental amalgam is a silver-coloured filling material made from a combination of mercury, silver, copper, zinc, and tin. It has been used in dentistry for over 150 years and has been extensively studied. Amalgam was widely used in the past but is now less commonly used, with some dentists choosing not to use it.

Composite Resin

Composite resin is a tooth-coloured filling material used for both front and back teeth. It is bonded directly to the tooth surface, meaning less tooth structure may need to be removed compared to some other filling materials. The material can be colour-matched to the natural tooth, making the filling less noticeable.

Frequently Asked Dental Filling Questions

What types of materials are used for Dental Fillings?

There are several types of fillings, including amalgam and tooth-coloured options like composite resin and porcelain. Each differing in appearance, durability, and strength.

How long do Dental Fillings last?

This may vary depending on the material of your filling. Usually on average, dental fillings last for 10 years or more, and in some cases less.

Is Dental Filling procedure painful?

The dental filling procedure is generally not painful. Local anaesthetic will be used to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible during and after your procedure. At Dental Boutique™, we also offer many other pain management options if you require them.

How long does it take to get a Dental Filling?

We reserve 60 minutes for our dental filling procedure; however, it is dependent on the size and location of the cavity.

Can I eat or drink after getting a Dental Filling?

We recommend waiting around 1 to 2 hours following your treatment before starting to consider eating soft foods again. However, every case is different. For some patients, the effects of local anaesthetic may take longer to wear off, so you should wait until you have a sense of feeling within your mouth.
